yes you're rich. so?

"If you are wealthy, be humble. Plants bend when they bear fruit."
-Sai Baba of Shirdi (Spiritual Indian Leader)

i remember an old friend of mine way back in college. June 2009 Nursing Board Examination was (i think) the last time that we had our last communication. he wasn't able to pass the said examination and we haven't heard anything about him ever since. he was a colleague, classmate, barkada. having parents as physicians, his family belongs to the well-off of the society, he remained humble and easy to work with. he always stunned us with his cool gadgets, prank toys, and branded items and yet, he never slap the reality (that he could buy everything) to our faces.

we tease him rich kid, rich boy, the lucky one, banker and others but he only replies with a shrug on the shoulder (and sometimes ignores us) :p. he never wanted to be called such because like what he said.. "di ako mayaman." in a very sincere way. funny thing is, he spends a lot with his miniature car collections or matchbox. he already has dozens of it on his room. a collection seldom seen on average middle-class teenage guy. he maintained a very low-profile during the entire course of our college years.

i admire him for that.

i wish some would acquire that trait. being humble despite being wealthy. i think it is too redundant for rich people to brag what they have or what they could afford. we know you're rich, be thankful for it. no need to tell us what brand you're wearing from head to toe, nor where you ate your last meal. bragging has never been a very good way to win people's approval/acceptance. they might think you're too much, very intimidating, or narcissistic.

it's not being bitter or something. it's being considerate to those who can't afford to have a single meal. or to those who can't buy a piece of cloth. it is your money. and you can do anything with it. but please. save the ego-feeding only to yourself no matter how rich you are, or how much you could give.

even bragging charitable works isn't advised as what is written on the bible (Matthew 6:2), what more for gloating your personal expenditures..

*So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. -Matthew 6:2
*i'm not losing hope. at the moment, i know some people who were humble enough to keep their luxuries on their own. kudos to them.
*I saw my friend's name on the list of those who passed the December 2010 Nursing Board Licensure Examination. finally! congratulations to him.
